TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Much of India has been gripped by extreme heatwave conditions over the past few days, with temperatures soaring to 46 degrees Celsius.
Primary schools in several regions have been ordered to close, while others have adjusted teaching hours in a concerted effort to shield children from health risks such as heatstroke.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Jaisalmer and Barmer districts in the western state of Rajasthan emerged as the hottest spots on Monday, April 27, with temperatures peaking at 46.4 degrees Celsius.
Jharsuguda district in the eastern state of Odisha recorded a high of 44.8 degrees Celsius, marking a significant 4.2 degrees Celsius above the seasonal norm, while Sonepur district in the same state saw highs of 43.7 degrees Celsius.
The capital, New Delhi, recorded a high of 42.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, April 25.
The IMD further reported that on Sunday, April 26, several areas in the southwestern state of Maharashtra, most notably Akola, Wardha, and Amravati, registered a record high of 46.9 degrees Celsius.
In response to the blistering heat, the IMD has repeatedly issued health advisories, urging the public to maintain hydration and avoid non-essential outdoor activities between 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. local time.
As a precautionary measure, a specialized ward dedicated to treating heatstroke cases has been opened at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in central Delhi.
