TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, has urged all parties to anticipate extreme weather during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr travel period. "We continue to strive to ensure that crossings or mobility from Java to Sumatra, or vice versa, can be well-served. Therefore, we are preparing all the necessary services," said Dudy as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

The Minister stated that with the potential for extreme weather, all parties must anticipate, especially during the mass exodus to hometowns for Eid al-Fitr and the return journey. "In relation to extreme weather, we will also coordinate with the BMKG to ensure the smooth implementation of Eid al-Fitr transportation," he added.

Dudy explained that, if possible, the Ministry of Transportation will consider providing weather modification services to the public during their crossings. "We will assess the conditions up until the implementation of the Eid al-Fitr Transportation posts on March 13. The police have also carried out their operations before March 13," he said.

He also emphasized the need to anticipate high waves in the crossing waters. "There have been recommendations related to the addition of joint personnel to control traffic congestion and mitigate the risk of accidents during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transportation," he said.

The Ministry of Transportation predicts that approximately 143.9 million people will travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr period. This figure is based on the 2026 Eid al-Fitr Transportation Survey and serves as the government's basis for preparing strategies to control the flow of homecoming and return travelers this year.

Minister Dudy stated that the projection of 143.9 million people in 2026 is slightly lower than the 146 million potential movements recorded in the 2025 survey. However, the actual figure in the field at that time reached 154 million people.

"We assume that in 2026, considering the sufficiently long holiday period and the implementation of flexible working arrangement (FWA) policies, the period of public movement can last for approximately two weeks," he said.
