TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned what it described as a second Israeli attack on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon after two Indonesian members of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were killed and two others injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 31, the ministry said: “The Government of the Republic of Indonesia condemns in the strongest terms the second consecutive incident near Bani Haiyyan, southern Lebanon, on 30 March 2026 affecting Indonesian peacekeepers serving under UNIFIL, resulting in the loss of two more lives and injuries to two others.”

The government said the repeated attacks within a short period were intolerable.

The recurrence of such heinous attacks against Indonesian peacekeepers within a short span of time is utterly unacceptable,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Indonesia Condemns Israel’s Operations

Indonesia said the latest attack could not be viewed as an isolated incident, but as part of the worsening security situation in southern Lebanon driven by Israel’s ongoing military operations.

This cannot be treated as an isolated occurrence, but reflects a rapidly deteriorating security environment in southern Lebanon, where ongoing Israeli military operations have placed United Nations peacekeepers at grave risk,” the statement said.

The government also reiterated its condemnation of Israel’s military actions in the area.

Indonesia continues to strongly condemn Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which have significantly increased the risks faced by UN peacekeepers and undermined the implementation of UNIFIL’s mandate under Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006),” the statement added.

The ministry stressed that the safety and security of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable.

The safety and security of UN peacekeepers is non-negotiable. Any harm against them constitutes a serious violation of international law and must not go unanswered,” it said.

Indonesia also called for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation into the attacks.

Indonesia calls for an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation to establish the facts, including the circumstances and those responsible, and stresses that full accountability must follow.”

Second Deadly Incident in Less Than 24 Hours

According to UNIFIL, two peacekeepers were killed and two others injured — one critically — after an explosion struck their vehicle near Bani Hayyan in the Marjeyoun district on Monday, March 30. UNIFIL described the blast as an “unexplained explosion” and said an investigation had been launched.

A day earlier, one peacekeeper was killed and another injured after a projectile struck a UNIFIL position near Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that Israeli artillery shelling hit the headquarters of the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent in the area.

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the peacekeeper killed in Sunday’s attack was Indonesian. It also said three other Indonesian personnel were injured in what it described as “indirect artillery fire.”
