TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has decided that students should continue to have face-to-face learning amidst the global crisis. The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, stated that the government considers face-to-face learning a priority.
Pratikno affirmed this in an internal directive to the deputy ministers of health and education at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, confirmed that there are no plans for online learning for students. Thus, the learning process for elementary to high school students will continue as normal, with face-to-face classes for five days a week.
Prior to this, during a cabinet meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on March 13, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the need to conserve fuel consumption. Prabowo also considered the option of work from home as a precautionary measure against the impact of the global crisis.
Here are the reasons why face-to-face learning must continue:
1. Education Quality Must Be Maintained
Pratikno stated that face-to-face learning is a government priority. In the midst of the global crisis, the quality of education must be maintained. Therefore, the education sector should operate optimally and preferably be conducted offline.
2. Preventing Learning Loss
Pratikno mentioned that Prabowo is attentive to the improvement of human resources quality, especially in the fields of education and health. Pratikno does not want the learning process to lead to learning loss.
The term 'learning loss' refers to the loss of knowledge and skills, either in a general or specific sense, or the regression of academic progress due to certain factors. Hence, the government prioritizes face-to-face learning for students.
3. No Urgency for Hybrid Learning
Pratikno admitted that there have been discussions regarding the possibility of using hybrid methods in the students' learning process. However, inter-ministerial discussions agreed that there is currently no urgency for online learning for students.
"Following the President's extraordinary priority for the education sector, starting from school revitalization, popular schools, to exemplary Garuda schools, we must expedite the overall improvement of education quality," Pratikno said.
