TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia says it "deeply regrets" the failure of the negotiations between the US and Iran, which has led to military escalation in the Middle East region. The statement, released by Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the X social media platform on Saturday, February 28, 2026, refers to the joint attack by Washington and Tel Aviv earlier today.
"Indonesia calls on all parties to exercise restraint and to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy," the statement read.
Indonesia reiterates the importance of "respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country and resolving differences through peaceful means."
The Indonesian government, particularly President Prabowo Subianto, expresses his readiness to "facilitate dialogue" to create conducive security conditions.
Prabowo also says he is willing to travel to Tehran "to conduct mediation" if agreed to by both the US and Iran.
The escalation of tension in the Middle East has the potential to disturb "regional stability" as well as "world peace and security," Indonesia warns.
Indonesia Advises Citizens in Iran
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang says in a separate statement that the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran is prioritizing intensive communication with Indonesians in Iran.
The embassy has issued a circular to advise and guide Indonesians in the country to maintain safety and security at their respective residences.
"We will continue to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the security situation and take necessary steps to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens," said Yvonne in a statement received by Tempo.
She urged all Indonesian citizens in Iran to remain calm, increase vigilance, follow the local authorities' instructions, and maintain communication with the Indonesian Embassy.
In emergency situations, Indonesians are directed to contact the Hotline of the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran at +98 9914668845 / +98 902 466 8889 or the Hotline of the Directorate for Citizen Protection at +62 812-9007-0027.
