TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chair of Commission X of the lndonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Lalu Hadrian Irfani has assessed that the plan to implement online learning should not be carried out nationwide simultaneously. He suggested that this policy should be selectively implemented depending on the region.
"The implementation of distance learning should be selective, taking into account the readiness of each region," said Lalu in his written statement on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
According to him, the Indonesian government still needs to comprehensively review the impact of online learning activities. This includes the level of student learning achievement, education access gaps, and the psychosocial conditions of students.
Furthermore, Lalu assessed that digital infrastructure in various regions is still uneven. He stated that the plan for online learning has the potential to widen the education gap among students.
Therefore, he believes that before the idea of online learning is implemented, there needs to be adequate support from the government. "This includes providing internet access, data subsidies, learning devices, and training for teachers to ensure that the (online) learning process remains optimal," said the politician from the United Development Party faction.
Lalu Hadrian also advocates for periodic evaluations if the idea of online learning is realized. If the results have a negative impact on the quality of education, he urges for the distance learning policy to be discontinued.
"We hope that efforts to save energy can still be carried out without sacrificing the quality of education in Indonesia," he said.
The idea of online learning emerged after President Prabowo Subianto held a cabinet meeting at the State Palace on Friday, March 13, 2026. The meeting discussed the considerations of the Work from Home (WFH) policy as a precautionary measure against the impact of the global crisis. The plan to implement online learning was then discussed in a technical coordination meeting for fuel-saving policies.
Initially, the government targeted the plan to implement online learning in the coming April. However, the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno stated that face-to-face learning activities for students will remain a priority.
This decision was made after Pratikno held a cross-ministerial meeting with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti and the Minister of Religion Nasaruddin Umar.
Pratikno stated that the quality of student education must still be maintained, so the idea of online learning is considered not yet urgent. He believes that offline learning processes still need to be optimized even though the global situation is experiencing a crisis.
"Do not let learning loss occur. Therefore, the implementation of the learning process should prioritize offline learning for students," he said in his statement on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
