TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The member of House Commission I, Syamsu Rizal, has called for a comprehensive roadmap outlining Indonesia's participation in the Trump-backed Board of Peace. He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to swiftly develop the diplomatic direction.
The PKB lawmaker emphasized that a clear diplomatic direction is crucial to ensure that Indonesia's participation in the global forum provides tangible benefits for national interests. He warned that risky decisions must not proceed without careful planning.
"What are the goals, benefits, and risks for national interests and the welfare of our people," Syamsu stated in a written statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Syamsu also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security elements to map out the concrete opportunities and impact of the diplomacy resulting from the Board of Peace. Following this, Syamsu requested a thorough dissemination of information about the diplomatic roadmaps.
"Transparent public communication is important to avoid misunderstandings regarding the stance taken regarding international issues," he said.
Previously, Foreign Minister Sugiono stated Indonesia's willingness to join the peace organization initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump was decided shortly, precisely two days after Indonesia had intensive communication with the countries involved in the Group of New York.
However, Sugiono mentioned that the government has several measures in place regarding Indonesia's involvement in the Board of Peace. One of them is the peace in Gaza, Palestine, following the Israeli aggression. "Ultimately, we are seeking the independence and sovereignty of Palestine," Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
The Gerindra Party politician then stated that the government could withdraw from the Board of Peace if its objectives are not achieved. "We still don't know its office location, and what its secretariat is like," Sugiono said.
