TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) officially received the vessel KRI Canopus-936 during a handover ceremony held at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Germany on Thursday, February 12, 2026. This vessel is part of the Ministry of Defense ship procurement project.

Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy (Wakasal) Vice Admiral Erwin S. Aldedharma led the ceremony. Activities included ship naming, delivery, commissioning, and the appointment of the vessel's commander.

Erwin stated, "This vessel will strengthen the capacity of Kotama Pushidrosal in conducting basic hydro-oceanographic survey operations and supporting search and rescue as well as maritime security patrols," according to a press release issued on Saturday, February 14, 2026.

In an address by the Minister of Defense read by Wakasal, the procurement of this vessel is part of the modernization of the Indonesian Navy’s primary weaponry system. The handover is also regarded as a milestone in the strategic cooperation between Indonesia and Germany.

Following the ceremony, the appointment of Colonel Laut (P) Indragiri Yani Wardhono as the commander of KRI Canopus-936 marked the official start of the vessel's operational tenure within the Indonesian Navy. The construction of the ship spanned three years, and it is manned by 93 soldiers.

This vessel is an Ocean-Going Hydro-Oceanographic Support Vessel (BHO). The BHO is a support asset for the TNI AL, responsible for hydrographic and oceanographic surveys, including sea mapping and the measurement of depths, currents, tides, and seabed characteristics to ensure navigation safety and support military operations.

Additionally, the ship is equipped with several unmanned systems, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), the Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) ZBoat, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) such as Drone Lidar and Multibeam Echosounders. For defense, the vessel is armed with a 20-millimeter cannon and a 12.7-millimeter machine gun.

The event was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, a team of naval staff advisors and assistants, representatives of the German Navy, and the CEO of Abeking & Rasmussen. The Indonesian Navy stated that the addition of KRI Canopus-936 is expected to enhance maritime operational capabilities during both wartime and peacetime while strengthening Indonesia's overall maritime defense posture.
