TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta and Banten provincial governments signed a memorandum of understanding for the development of the integrated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) East-West Line Phase 2, stretching from Kembangan to Balaraja, at Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that inter-regional cooperation is essential to address mobility challenges within the Jakarta metropolitan area and its surroundings. According to him, the expansion of mass transportation cannot be achieved by any single region acting alone.

"The signed memorandum of understanding covers the development of the MRT East-West Line from Kembangan to Balaraja, involving PT MRT Jakarta and developers located along the route," Pramono said in an official statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.

He explained that the MRT East-West Line is expected to broaden public transportation services and bolster connectivity across the agglomeration area. The corridor is designed to link the North-South line to the Kota Tua area and the East-West corridor to Balaraja, Banten.

Pramono noted that Jakarta and Banten form a unified metropolitan zone facing shared challenges, particularly regarding transportation, the environment, and public services. Consequently, cooperation between regional governments is viewed as the key to resolving these issues. "These problems cannot be solved in isolation," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Banten Governor Andra Soni welcomed Banten’s involvement in the cross-regional MRT development plan. He believes the mobility dependency between Jakarta and Banten is inseparable. "Banten needs Jakarta, and Jakarta needs Banten; there is no other way but to cooperate," Andra said.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by PT MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat alongside several developers situated within the planned route. This cooperation serves as the framework for implementing the development study of the cross-regional MRT project.

The number of MRT users reached 46.5 million in 2025. The company aims to increase that figure to 50 million in 2026 in tandem with the network expansion plan.
