TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta government and the United Nations in Indonesia launched the country’s first-ever SDGs Corner at Museum Bahari Jakarta on Saturday, February 14, 2026. The museum-based space is dedicated to bringing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) closer to the youth and the general public.
“Jakarta is moving forward as a Global City, and that progress must go hand in hand with sustainability and inclusion,” said Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno, as quoted on Monday from a press release received by Tempo.
According to Rano Karno, Jakarta faces numerous environmental challenges as a coastal city. The SDGs Corner, he said, will “connect development, climate action, and community awareness” about these issues in an accessible way.
Inaugurated together with UNIC (UN Information Centre) Indonesia Director Miklos Gaspar, the SDGs Corner introduces a new way of learning about sustainable development through Indonesia’s maritime heritage. The use of storytelling highlights the links between marine life, coastal communities, waste management, food security, and climate change.
“By placing the SDGs inside a cultural space, we make global goals real and relevant to local life,” said Miklos Gaspar. “This pilot shows young Indonesians that protecting the ocean and the climate begins with understanding their own heritage.”
SDGs Corner is designed as an interactive narrative space that is intended to help visitors see the development goals as part of everyday life, especially for Indonesian maritime communities.
The initiative also promotes inclusivity by ensuring equal access for persons with disabilities, reflecting Jakarta’s commitment to sustainable and people-centered urban development.
The space was jointly developed with Musee ID, a community that transforms museum storytelling into a modern learning experience.
“Museums should inspire action, not just preserve history,” said Nofa Farida Lestari, Director of Musee ID. “We created the SDGs Corner as an inclusive, engaging space that speaks to today’s situation.”
