TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the Developing Eight (D-8) Summit is expected to generate concrete cooperation, particularly in strengthening the economies of member nations.

The Indonesian government is currently finalizing preparations for the high-level Summit, which is scheduled to take place in Jakarta in April 2026.

"We are currently drafting the substance; the key is how to make this summit concrete and deliver tangible results," Sugiono said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to him, the Indonesian government is currently drafting the core substance of the meeting. He emphasized that this year's D-8 Summit is aimed at producing concrete steps that will have a direct impact on member countries.

Sugiono explained that one of the primary focuses is the strengthening of economic cooperation among D-8 member states.

He noted that each member country possesses significant economic potential that can complement one another. "Because each member country has its own economic strength, which, if combined, would create a powerful force," he said.

Regarding the venue, Sugiono stated that the D-8 Summit is planned to be held in Jakarta, with a representative location currently being sought.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arief Havas Oegroseno stated that the Indonesian government has prepared several important agenda items for this year's D-8 activities.

In addition to the D-8 Summit, Indonesia will also host the Ocean Impact Summit in Bali.

Havas stated that Indonesia has proposed that maritime issues be included as a new agenda item for D-8 cooperation. All member countries, he added, possess maritime territories, yet this issue has not been a focus of joint discussions until now.

"So, all D-8 countries have oceans, but the D-8 has never discussed the ocean; therefore, we want this year's D-8 to also feature an agenda on global oceans, which has now been included," Havas said.

Regarding the attendance of D-8 heads of state, Havas stated that the government has dispatched official invitations. "We have sent invitations, so we cannot announce the details to the public yet," he said.

The D-8 itself is a development cooperation organization founded in 1997 by eight developing countries, most of which are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Member countries include Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. This organization was formed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of economics, trade, and development to create inclusive and sustainable growth.
