TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita highlighted the car sales in Malaysia approaching the same figures and potentially surpassing sales in Indonesia in 2025. He said that this situation should be a cause for concern for every brand.
"Of course, I want to invite all stakeholders, we must be able to find or formulate the right steps, take mitigating measures," he said during his opening speech at the automotive exhibition at JIExpo Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, February 5, 2026.
Agus sees the potential for car sales figures in Indonesia to be overtaken by Malaysia based on the 2024 data. In that year, sales in Indonesia reached 865,723 units, while Malaysia reached 816,747 units.
According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industries Association (Gaikindo), wholesale sales (from factory to dealer) from January to November 2025 totaled 709,587 units. Retail sales (from dealer to consumer) amounted to 739,879 units. Meanwhile, in Malaysia, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) recorded sales of 727,836 units in 2025.
In 2025, Gaikindo recorded a total of 803,687 wholesale sales and 833,712 retail sales. However, MAA has not officially released the total sales data for 2025.
Agus Gumiwang said that Indonesia needs to implement mitigation strategies to become the country with the highest automotive sales in Southeast Asia. "If we can already have the same vision, I believe we can overcome whatever challenges there may be," he said.
Agus hopes that automotive exhibition events like the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2026 can boost sales this year. The committee aims for the transaction figures to match those of IIMS 2025, which amounted to Rp8 trillion.
