TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian government has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the United Nations (UN) as the world’s primary institution for maintaining global peace, amid the emergence of the so-called Board of Peace (BoP).
"Regarding the establishment of the Board of Peace, the government has taken note of concerns from Members of Parliament that this body should not serve as a replacement for the United Nations (UN)," Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman bin Awang Sauni said during a session of the Dewan Rakyat, Malaysia’s Parliament, in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, as quoted by Antara.
"Malaysia will continue to uphold the UN’s role as the world’s primary institution in maintaining global peace," he added.
Lukanisman said the government had taken note of concerns raised by council members that the body initiated by United States President Donald Trump should not replace or undermine the UN’s role.
He noted that at least 12 countries have rejected participation in the Board of Peace.
"For the information of Members of Parliament, at least 12 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, have rejected participation in the Board of Peace."
France, he said, formally opposed the initiative on the grounds that it challenges the UN’s multilateral framework and imposes an unreasonable membership fee of US$1 billion (around Rp16 trillion).
Ireland and Spain have also expressed reluctance to join the Board of Peace, viewing it as an additional framework that overlaps with the UN’s existing mandate.
"The People's Republic of China and Russia have also criticized this initiative as a strategy to sideline the role of the UN Security Council through a unilaterally controlled platform," Lukanisman said.
Addressing the Palestinian issue, Lukanisman emphasized that it is not merely a religious matter, but a humanitarian and human rights issue involving the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, their right of return, and the establishment of a sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He said Malaysia remains committed to upholding its principles and will not compromise its stance simply to participate in negotiations that do not guarantee genuine justice for Palestine and its people.
Malaysia, he added, will continue to use all available diplomatic channels, including the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and ASEAN, to ensure that Palestinian voices are heard internationally while pushing for a swift resolution to the conflict.
“Malaysia will remain steadfast with Palestine because their struggle is our struggle, and their victory is a victory for humanity,” Lukanisman said.
