No Electricity Export to Singapore This Year, Says Airlangga

6 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has shelved plans to export electricity to Singapore this year. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the initiative is still undergoing evaluation with strategic ministers, such as the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in hopes that the memorandum of understanding signed last year can be realized by the upcoming high-level bilateral leaders' summit.

"Not this year; constructing the required infrastructure will take at least one to one and a half years," Airlangga said during a press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

During the press briefing, journalists initially directed the question to Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong following the 16th Indonesia-Singapore Six Bilateral Economic Working Groups Ministerial Meeting at the ministry. However, Gan declined to comment, deferring the question to Airlangga instead.

Previously, Indonesia and Singapore agreed to cooperate on developing renewable energy infrastructure through a memorandum of understanding signed on Friday, June 13, 2025. The centerpiece of the agreement states that Indonesia will export 3.4 gigawatts of green electricity to Singapore.

At the time, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia noted that the agreed framework was designed to be mutually beneficial for both neighbors. The implementation of the cross-border project is being reviewed gradually.

"The government is currently discussing the technical details alongside the Ministry of Investment and Industrial Estates and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs team," Bahlil said.
