TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Korea is bracing for heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday, July 14, as Typhoon Bavi approaches after making landfall in China. President Kim Jong Un has urged state officials and workers to “remain on maximum vigilance” to prevent damage, according to CNA, citing the state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper.
The newspaper reported that North Korea’s state weather agency had issued a warning for heavy rain and strong winds through Wednesday, but Typhoon Bavi is expected to weaken into a low-pressure system before crossing the country’s central region via the Yellow Sea.
Rainfall of 80mm to 120mm is expected on Tuesday in the North Phyongan Province and southern parts of North Korea’s central region, as well as some parts of Jagang Province bordering China, The Korea Times reported.
Meanwhile, heavier rain of 150mm to 200mm is expected locally across South and North Phyongan provinces and parts of its southern region, with strong winds of 10m to 15m per second forecast along the west coast and parts of the inland.
North Korea has ramped up disaster prevention efforts since last week, but the country's weak infrastructure and economy tend to make natural disaster impacts worse.
The return of El Nino this year also added to the risks, a natural phenomenon linked to extreme heat, drought, and heavy rain across parts of Asia.
North Korea was hit by severe flooding in its northern regions in 2024, with thousands said to be dead or missing, but Pyongyang dismissed the estimates at the time, CNA reported.
How Did Typhoon Bavi Affect Other Countries?
Typhoon Bavi has recently battered East Asia—including Taiwan, Japan, and China—and the Philippines.
In China, over 260,000 were forced to evacuate in northeastern Liaoning province as Typhoon Bavi brought intense flooding, after Xinhua reported earlier that around 1.72 million had been evacuated to safe places by Saturday.
Philippines has also borne the brunt of Bavi, as heavy rains triggered landslides in Mindanao, killing at least 15 people.
Typhoon Bavi is the longest-lasting tropical cyclone in the Asia-Pacific region this year, after forming in the Pacific Ocean 13 days ago and remaining largely intact on Monday. Covering an area the size of France, Taiwan's weather agency earlier described it as the largest storm by size hitting the island since 1987.
