TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian citizen was reportedly one of three crew members killed in an attack on a merchant vessel in the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, according to Antara, citing Anadolu.
According to the government-affiliated broadcaster Al-Jumhuriya TV, the attack, suspected to have been carried out by the Houthi group in Yemen, also killed two Pakistani citizens, according to initial reports.
The broadcaster did not name the vessel attacked or identify its owner. There has been no statement from the Houthis regarding the attack.
The Bab Al-Mandeb Strait is a gateway to the Red Sea located on the western side of the Arabian Peninsula.
Meanwhile, citing TRT World, Houthi also attacked a port near the Bab al Mandeb and nearby residential areas on Sunday, according to Yemeni sources. The attack killed at least seven civilians and military personnel, while around 35 others were wounded.
The attacks came as fighting intensified among several fronts in Yemen since last month.
Years of war between Houthi and the Saudi-led government in Yemen came to a relative lull in April 2022, but violence reignited on July 13, following a Saudi air strike on Sanaa airport.
Tit-for-tat attacks ever since have killed dozens of people and wounded others on both sides. The UN has called for restraint.
“Yemen today faces a greater risk of renewed large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022,” UN envoy Hans Grundberg warned on Friday, as quoted from Al Jazeera.
