TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina EP (PEP) Prabumulih Field has revealed its efforts to prevent crude oil theft at the Prabumulih oil and gas field in South Sumatra. Officers uncovered the illegal activity after finding a truck with modified tanks in the vicinity of the production well area. The truck was suspected of having been used for the illegal transportation of crude oil.
Senior Manager of Prabumulih Field, Muhammad Luthfi Ferdiansyah, stated that cooperation with law enforcement authorities is a crucial factor in maintaining the security of the oil and gas operational area. "We appreciate the support of the Lembak Police Sector in handling this incident," Luthfi said as quoted from a written statement on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
He mentioned that the seized crude oil has been confiscated as evidence and deposited at the Prabumulih Production Collection Center Prabumulih. Meanwhile, the truck used in the operation has been confiscated by the police for further investigation purposes.
The revelation of this illegal practice occurred near SP 1 TTB. The PEP Prabumulih Field Security Team, together with the Closed Protection Unit (PAMTUP) Zone 4, found a truck stranded on the back road of SP 1 TTB towards Well 49 on Saturday, January 31, 2026, around 10:00 AM.
The vehicle used a special tank not commonly used for regular transportation. The initial examination results indicated that the truck was carrying approximately 10 tons of crude oil, which is suspected to have come from the nearby oil wells.
Luthfi added that the large cargo volume and the use of modified tanks indicate planned oil theft. After making this discovery, the Prabumulih Field of PEP immediately coordinated with the Lembak Police Sector to handle the case legally and develop it.
Security forces tightened security during the crime scene investigation and checked the surrounding wells for evidence of similar theft activities.
