TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto departed for Japan on Sunday for an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in trade, technology, education, as well as forestry and environmental cooperation.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi told reporters in Jakarta on Sunday that Prabowo is expected to discuss a range of strategic issues that have long been central to Indonesia-Japan relations.
“These meetings are, of course, intended to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between the two countries. In particular, the President will discuss strategic issues that have long been the foundation of our cooperation with the Japanese government,” Prasetyo said.
He added that the talks would cover areas such as trade, technology, education, and cooperation in forestry and environmental affairs.
Prasetyo said Prabowo’s visit to Japan was made at the invitation of Emperor Naruhito. During the trip, the Indonesian president is scheduled to meet both Emperor Naruhito and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
“The agenda includes a meeting with the Emperor, followed by a meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi,” Prasetyo said.
Prabowo departed for Japan from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta at around 10:35 a.m. local time, accompanied by a limited delegation.
The president’s departure was seen off by House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, and National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
Accompanying Prabowo on the flight to Japan were Foreign Minister Sugiono, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
After completing his visit to Japan, Prabowo and his delegation are scheduled to continue on to South Korea for the next leg of the trip.
The East Asia tour is part of Indonesia’s active diplomacy to strengthen its strategic position in the region and deepen cooperation with key partners.
