TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to hold a limited meeting with several ministers at his private residence in Bojongkoneng Village, Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Monday, June 9, 2025.
A source familiar with the meeting’s agenda told Tempo that the discussion will center on nickel mining in Raja Ampat. Ministers expected to attend include Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Environment and Forestry Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni.
Prabowo Reportedly to Discuss Halting Raja Ampat Nickel Mining in Today’s Meeting
According to the source, Prabowo intends to stop nickel mining operations in the area.
"Prabowo wants to stop nickel mining," the source said on Monday.
Yusuf Permana, Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media at the Presidential Secretariat, said he would verify whether the meeting is taking place. "I'll check. I'm currently in Mecca," he said via WhatsApp on Monday, June 8.
Head of the KLIK Bureau, Sunindyo Suryo Herdadi, said he was unaware of the meeting. "I don't have that information," he said.
However, the meeting was confirmed by Togar M. Simatupang, Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology. Minister Brian Yuliarto is also set to attend. "Sir will attend the limited meeting," Togar told Tempo.
Tempo has sought confirmation from several officials, including State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, Presidential Communications Head Hasan Nasbi, and Cabinet Secretary Maj. Teddy Indra Wijaya, but received no response.
Similarly, Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Minister Raja Juli Antoni, and ESDM spokesperson Dwi Anggia have not replied to inquiries.
Previously, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that PT GAG Nickel’s mining site in Raja Ampat is not located in a conservation area. He said the operation is on Gag Island, about 30 to 40 kilometers from Piaynemo, a key tourist destination.
"Many claim the mine is at Piaynemo, that's wrong. The mine is on Gag Island, quite far from there. I know because I often visit Raja Ampat," Bahlil said in a written statement on Friday, June 6.
Amid public concern, Bahlil announced a temporary suspension of PT GAG Nickel’s operations as of Thursday, June 5, pending a site inspection. "We will temporarily stop until we directly check the conditions in the field," he said.
Although Bahlil stated that the mining activities in Raja Ampat are not within a conservation area and are about 30 to 40 kilometers from the tourist area, constitutional law expert from Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, Feri Amsari, considers that the nickel mining permit still contradicts the laws and the Constitutional Court's ruling.
