TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto began a visit to the United States (US) on Monday, February 16, 2026. According to an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat Office, Prabowo and a limited entourage departed for Washington, D.C., from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta.
During this working visit, the Head of State was accompanied by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. Prabowo is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump.
The meeting is planned to discuss strengthening relations between Indonesia and the United States and strategic cooperation in various fields. "This visit is part of Indonesia's active diplomatic efforts to strengthen its national position amidst global geopolitical dynamics," the Presidential Secretariat Office stated on Monday, February 16, 2026.
In this visit, Prabowo will attend the Gaza Peace Council Summit in the US on February 19, 2026. In addition to this agenda, Prabowo's visit to the US will also include the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with President Donald Trump.
Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Spokesperson Haryo Limanseto stated that the President had made preparations through a meeting with several Indonesian Cabinet ministers at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Sunday, February 15, 2026.
The meeting, which took place ahead of the US visit, aimed to align policy positions and refine economic negotiation strategies. "The meeting discussed updates on Indonesia-US negotiations, and it was announced that the President plans to arrive in the United States on the 19th. Around that date, the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) is planned," Haryo said in an official statement on February 16, 2026.
The Agreement on Reciprocal Trade is a reciprocal trade contract. Haryo added that the series of events will also include business and investment meetings between Indonesian and US businesspeople, as part of the signing of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between President Prabowo and President Trump.
At the meeting in Hambalang, the President emphasized the importance of ensuring Indonesia's position remains strong and measured ahead of a number of international agendas, including the meeting with the US. Prabowo also instructed his aides to ensure Indonesia's bargaining position remains strong and does not harm national interests.
Citing the website of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Indonesia-US tariff negotiations have been substantially completed. The two countries have completed the process of harmonizing legal language (legal drafting).
Within the framework of the agreement, Indonesia committed to exempting import duties on most products from the United States. Meanwhile, the United States reduced the reciprocal tariff on Indonesian products from 32 percent to 19 percent and granted tariff exemptions for several of Indonesia's leading export commodities, including crude palm oil (CPO), coffee, and cocoa.
