TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Finance Minister, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, confirmed on Wednesday that the government has finalized its work-from-home (WFH) policy, with an official announcement expected in the near future. However, Purbaya clarified that he will not be the one delivering the announcement to the public.
“It has been decided and will be announced later. I am not the one who will speak; Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, will announce it,” Purbaya said in Jakarta.
Responding to government projections that WFH could reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, Purbaya acknowledged calculations estimating a decline, but noted the results are not yet definitive. He stressed that the policy’s impact cannot be viewed from a single perspective.
According to Purbaya, increased economic activity could offset energy savings by boosting business performance and, ultimately, government tax revenues.
“In my view, fuel savings might not be significant, because as economic activity rises, businesses grow, and consumption increases. But if tax revenues also rise, it aligns with overall benefits,” he explained.
The Finance Minister further emphasized that the government is taking a comprehensive approach in assessing the effects of the WFH policy.
Regarding plans to implement WFH on Fridays, as outlined by Coordinating Minister Airlangga, Purbaya noted the day was chosen to minimize productivity losses.
“If a day off is selected, it is chosen to have the smallest impact on productivity. Friday has the shortest working hours, so the productivity loss is considered minimal,” he added.
However, Purbaya could not confirm whether the WFH policy would be mandatory for the private sector.
“I’m not sure. Factories may not participate. For the private sector, it may only be a recommendation. Government offices will be required to comply,” he concluded, emphasizing that the policy’s official details will be shared soon.
