TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Korean and Japanese coast guards on Saturday continued a joint rescue operation for a missing Indonesian crew member (ABK Indonesia) near Dokdo Island, the easternmost island of South Korea, earlier this week, officials said.
The crew member in his twenties on the fishing vessel fell overboard about 195 kilometers northeast of Dokdo at around 11:15 a.m. on Friday.
Along with a 5,000-ton South Korean vessel and a 1,250-ton Japanese vessel, a civilian fishing vessel also joined the search operation that resumed after sunrise, according to officials as reported by Kyodo and quoted by Antara.
A coast guard official vowed to carry out an unhindered search, adding that both parties are working together and doing their best to locate the missing crew member in the waters between the two countries.
Previously, in March 2024, a South Korean-flagged chemical tanker, Keoyoung Sun, capsized off the coast of Yamaguchi, Japan, on March 20, 2024. The ship carried 11 crew members, including 8 Indonesians. Eight people were reported dead, while a search was ongoing for the missing crew, with one Indonesian reported to have survived.
Meanwhile, in November 2024, the fishing vessel Geumseongsusan 135 sank in the waters off Jeju on November 8, 2024. Of the 27 crew members consisting of 16 Koreans and 11 Indonesians, 15 people were found alive. However, 12 people were reported missing, including Indonesians.
