TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urges Indonesians to increase vigilance following the potential extreme weather conditions for the next week, from February 15 to 21, 2026. BMKG signals a strengthened Asian Monsoon, which brings dominant westerly winds, accelerating the growth of convective clouds in the western and southern parts of Indonesia.
Acting Deputy for Meteorology at BMKG, Andri Ramdhani, stated that this condition is reinforced by the activity of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in the Indian Ocean. It is also supported by Kelvin and Rossby atmospheric waves triggering the formation of convergence, especially on the south coast of Java to Nusa Tenggara.
"The combination of these factors increases the potential for moderate to heavy rains, which could bring with it thunderstorms and strong winds in several regions," Andri said in a written statement on Sunday, January 15, 2026.
He detailed that the potential for extreme weather on February 15-16 encompasses Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Jakarta, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, NTB, North Sulawesi, Papua Highlands, and Papua.
Moving into February 17 and 18, extreme weather is still expected in Aceh, West Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, NTB, North Sulawesi, Bangka Belitung Islands and East Kalimantan.
On February 19, early warning applies to Bangka Belitung, West Sumatra, East Java, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, and Papua Highlands. On February 20 and 21, extreme weather looms over West Sumatra, East Java, Bali, NTB, and NTT.
"These weather conditions require stronger vigilance to anticipate the potential impact of hydrometeorological disasters in several areas," Andri added.
BMKG, Andri said, hopes that regional governments and relevant agencies will continue to strengthen preparedness and mitigation measures in accordance with the risk levels and vulnerability characteristics of their respective regions.
BMKG also reminds the public, especially those in disaster-prone areas, to increase vigilance while remaining calm and avoiding activities in risky locations, such as watersheds, landslide-prone slopes, and areas vulnerable to flooding and inundation.
"Transportation service users, fishers, shipping operators, and aviation personnel are also expected to pay attention to weather information before engaging in activities to ensure travel safety," Andri stated. The public is also advised to regularly monitor the latest weather information through BMKG official channels.
