TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Crude oil is a vital energy source for various aspects of modern life. From powering vehicles to supporting industrial production, major consumers around the world rely heavily on nations recognized as top crude oil producers.

At the very top spot is none other than the United States, pumping more than 13.58 million barrels per day, equivalent to around 16% of total global production. The Permian Basin largely underpins its dominance, spanning key oil-rich states like Texas and New Mexico. In addition to this region, other major reserves such as Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico also contribute significantly to US output.

This dominance comes as little surprise, given that the U.S. has held the top position since 2018. Previously, the rankings were closely contested between the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, often separated by only small margins. However, the rise of Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” allowed the U.S. to significantly boost production in the 2010s, eventually surpassing both Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world’s largest crude oil producer.

In 2023, the United States even set a record for the highest crude oil production in history.

Despite this, the Middle East remains the most powerful regional production hub. Five countries from the region, namely Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, secure spots in the top 10. All are located along the Persian Gulf, a region that holds nearly three-fifths of the world’s estimated oil reserves, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The Middle East has also long served as a major oil supplier to Asia, with countries like South Korea and Japan among the largest importers. As a result, any disruption affecting the Strait of Hormuz could significantly increase supply risks and vulnerability for these nations.

While these Middle Eastern producers are members of OPEC, several non-members also rank among the top producers. Canada and China, for instance, hold the fourth and sixth positions respectively.
