TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Trump told his aides that he is ready to end the military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains partly closed.
The report was written by The Wall Street Journal on Monday, citing several US government officials, as reported by Al Arabiya on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
According to the report, in the past few days, Trump and his aides concluded that the mission to fully open the Strait of Hormuz could potentially extend the conflict beyond the initial estimated duration of four to six weeks.
As reported by Antara, Trump has decided that Washington should focus on its main objectives, which include limiting the Iranian navy's capabilities and missile inventory, and easing the ongoing hostilities, while simultaneously pressuring Tehran to restore the smooth flow of trade.
If these efforts fail, Washington is said to push its allies in Europe and the Persian Gulf countries to take a greater role in reopening the strategic shipping lanes.
The report also mentioned that Trump is still considering additional military options, but it is not the main priority in his current strategy.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched an attack on several targets in Iran without clear objectives, including in the capital, Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran then retaliated by launching attacks on Israel and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The escalation around Iran has led to a de facto blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf countries to the global market. This situation has also impacted the levels of oil export and production in the region, leading to fuel price hikes in most countries worldwide.
Tolls in the Strait of Hormuz
Iran's state media reported on Monday that a parliamentary commission has approved a plan to impose tariffs on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Citing a member of the parliamentary security commission, the government television said the plan includes, among other things, “financial arrangements and rial toll systems” and “implementing the sovereign role of Iran.”
The agreement also includes “prohibition of Americans and the Zionist regime from passing through,” as well as a ban on other countries imposing sanctions on Iran.
About one-fifth of the global crude oil and liquefied natural gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz during peacetime.
Since the war began, crossings have plummeted by about 95 percent, according to maritime intelligence firm Kpler, with impacts felt across the global energy market.
