Trump Urges Americans to Move on from Epstein Files

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump has urged Americans to move on from the Jeffrey Epstein case, following the release of three million additional documents by the Department of Justice last week. "I think it's really time for the country to maybe get onto something else," Trump told reporters in the Oval Room on February 3, 2026. "Now that nothing came out about me, other than it was a conspiracy against me, literally by Epstein and other people."

Trump's name, his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, and other references related to him were mentioned 38,000 times among 5,300 documents in the Department of Justice's report on January 30, 2026, from the investigation of the accused sex trafficker Epstein, according to New York Times as cited by USA Today. However, some documents appear to be duplicates.

The release of additional Epstein documents by the Department of Justice in late January provided new details about Epstein's relationships with many influential figures. The big names listed in Epstein's files include former President Bill Clinton, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, and former Maine Senator George Mitchell. None of these individuals have been charged with crimes related to Epstein.

The Department of Justice is withholding about 2.5 million of its documents, citing concerns for the privacy of victims, portrayal of child sexual abuse, ongoing federal investigations, and various privileges such as legally protected communications between attorneys and clients.

Mary Trump, the president's niece and a frequent Trump critic, responded to Trump's statement in a post on X. "We are NOT moving on from the Epstein files."

US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also rejected Trump's request to forget about the Epstein files. Schumer stated on Wednesday that the US would not be able to forget the questions surrounding the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's files until all records are fully released.

"America will not move on from the Epstein files until America gets the whole truth, the full truth about the Epstein files. America will not move on until Donald Trump does what he promised, full transparency, and we haven't come close to that yet," Schumer said in the Senate chamber as reported by Anadolu.

Schumer said millions of documents are still in the dark and raise questions about what information might be contained in them. "We have no idea what's left in them, what is in there about Donald Trump? Did the Justice Department particularly hide and not reveal documents that might be damaging to Trump?" he asked.

He accused the Department of Justice of prioritizing Trump's interests over transparency and legal obligations. He accused the department of being less independent under leadership appointed by the president.

Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in a New York City prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. He pleaded guilty in a Florida state court and was convicted of procuring a minor for prostitution in 2008, but critics called the relatively lenient sentence a "sweetheart deal."

His victims accused him of running a sprawling sex trafficking network used by wealthy and political elite members.
