TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and Iran are set to hold talks this weekend in Islamabad, Pakistan, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi announced on Wednesday, March 25.
In an interview with the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, as reported by Anadolu, Grossi noted that the upcoming discussions would cover a broader spectrum of issues than previous encounters. The agenda is expected to include deliberations on missile programs, Iran-linked militias, and specific security guarantees for the country.
"This time, there will also be missiles, militias allied with the Islamic Republic, security guarantees for Iran on the table," Grossi said.
He mentioned the possibility of an interim solution, though he clarified it would not necessarily involve a military dimension. According to Grossi, there is an alternative diplomatic plan currently on the table that allows for a dual approach.
The first involves a temporary halt to uranium enrichment due to unfavorable political, military, and trust conditions, while the second suggests a comprehensive review of the issue in five to 10 years.
The joint US-Israeli offensive against Iran has been ongoing since February 28.
The attacks have reportedly claimed more than 1,340 lives, including that of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has since retaliated with a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as areas in Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.
These retaliatory strikes have resulted in numerous casualties, significant infrastructure damage, and widespread disruption to global markets and international aviation.
UN Rights Chief Calls on States to Push for End to Iran War
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called on countries to do everything they can to bring about an end to the US-Israeli war with Iran.
"This conflict has an unprecedented power to ensnare countries across borders and around the world," he said at an emergency meeting of the Human Rights Council called by Gulf states, as reported by DW.
He described the ongoing situation as extremely dangerous and unpredictable.
"The only guaranteed way to prevent this is to end the conflict, and I urge all states, and particularly those with influence, to do everything in their power to achieve this," he said.
