TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Argentina secured their spot in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup after coming back from a two-goal deficit in the round of 16 at the Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The team, known as La Albiceleste, defeated Egypt 3-2.
Under the guidance of Lionel Scaloni, Argentina was on the verge of defeat after Egypt led 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining. However, three goals in the last 11 minutes, including Enzo Fernandez's winning goal during injury time, reversed the tide and carried the defending champions to the quarterfinals.
Egypt opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Starting from Marwan Attia's corner kick, Yasser Ibrahim won an aerial duel in the penalty box and headed the ball into the right corner of the goal, putting his team ahead 1-0.
Argentina had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 21st minute after referee Francois Letexier awarded a penalty for a foul on Haissem Hassan. However, Lionel Messi's execution was thwarted by goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who accurately guessed the direction of the shot.
The Tango team continued to press. Alexis Mac Allister's header in the 28th minute was saved by Shobeir, while Messi's long-range shot three minutes later only hit the goalpost. Shortly before halftime, Shobeir made another crucial save by denying Julian Alvarez's chance.
Entering the second half, Egypt momentarily scored their second goal in the 58th minute through Mostafa Ziko after receiving a pass from Mohamed Salah in a swift counterattack. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee after a VAR review due to a foul in the process of creating the goal.
The two-goal lead was finally established in the 67th minute. This time, Egypt's counterattack yielded results again as Haissem Hassan sent a pass to Mostafa Ziko, who completed it. The score changed to 2-0.
Trailing by two goals, Scaloni made changes by bringing in Lautaro Martinez, Nicolas Gonzalez, and Gonzalo Montiel. The substitution proved to change the course of the match.
Argentina reduced the deficit in the 79th minute. Lionel Messi sent a lob into the penalty box, which was met by Cristian Romero's header, bringing the score to 2-1.
Four minutes later, Messi was decisive once again. This time, Argentina's captain unleashed a volley from inside the penalty box. The ball hit the crossbar before entering the goal. The equalizer became 2-2.
As the match seemed headed to extra time, Argentina scored the winning goal in the 90+2 minute. Lautaro Martinez sent a cross into the penalty box, which was met by a header from Enzo Fernandez. The score changed to 3-2 and remained until the end of the match.
In the remaining match, the tension increased. Several Egyptian players, including Mostafa Shobeir, Hamdi Fathy, and Marwan Attia, received yellow cards, while coach Hossam Hassan also received a yellow card during injury time.
