TEMPO.COJakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded that a total of 40 flood and landslide victims in Sumatra were found by a joint team on Monday, December 8, 2025. This brings the temporary total of casualties to 961 people.

Head of the Data Information and Communication Center for Disaster Management at BNPB, Abdul Muhari, stated that the highest number of casualties were found in Aceh Province. "As of December 8, the number of casualties in Aceh increased by 23 people, bringing the total to 389," he said in a statement on Monday, December 8, 2025.

Aceh Province was hit by a subsequent flood on Sunday, December 7, 2025. The subsequent flood hit several villages in East Aceh Regency due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile, North Sumatra Province recorded a total of 338 deaths as a result of the floods and landslides. Then, in West Sumatra Province, 234 people were reported dead.

The number of casualties is likely to increase as there are still hundreds of people missing. Abdul stated that around 293 people from these three provinces are still missing.

However, he stated that the joint teams in the field will work as hard as possible to save the lives of the missing victims. "We will minimize the number of casualties as much as possible," he said.

BNPB also reported that the total number of displaced people affected by the disaster in the three provinces has reached millions. "The number of evacuees has reached 1,057,482 people," said Abdul.

The data on flood casualties in Sumatra reported by BNPB differs from the findings of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas). This agency recorded that as of Monday, December 8, 2025, the death toll from the Sumatra floods had reached 974 people.

The number of people still missing is 298. Then, the number of evacuees, according to Basarnas, is 10,957, while the number of survivors is 9,983.

Head of Basarnas, Air Marshal Mohammad Syafii, stated that his agency collected data on the Sumatra disaster casualties from reports by the Search and Rescue (SAR) Mission Coordinators in Aceh, Medan, Nias, to Padang. Meanwhile, according to him, BNPB gathered data on casualties from various sources.

"There are still differences in the data released by BNPB. However, we are confident that this data will eventually be the same," he said after the meeting with the DPR Commission V on Monday, December 8, 2025.
