Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is targeting the national gaming industry as the new engine for Indonesia's economic growth. Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Viada Hafid, stated that the national gaming industry is a promising creative sector, not only in terms of high economic value but also for the future of a self-reliant and globally competitive digital Indonesia.
She emphasized the need for a deep understanding of the needs of industry players. According to her, the government should not only view the potential of the gaming industry from an economic perspective but also strive to design targeted policies through direct dialogue with industry players.
To support the establishment of new studios and talent training, Komdigi will launch the Innovation Hub program in three major cities such as Jakarta, Medan, and Surabaya. In addition, the Indonesia Game Developer Exchange (IGDX) event on October 9-11, 2025 in Bali is also prepared as the peak of the consolidation of the national gaming industry. Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, the Director General of Komdigi's Digital Ecosystem, stated that these games are also for development. We have a cooperation program called the Innovation Hub, encouraging new companies to develop gaming companies and talent development.
Chair of the Indonesian Game Association (AGI), Shafiq Husein, revealed that the current global gaming market valuation has reached US$187 billion, which is twice the combined value of the film and music industries.
He stated that Indonesia's current gaming market value is Rp 30 trillion, the highest in Southeast Asia and ranked 15th in the world. However, only 2.5 percent of the national market value is enjoyed by local developers. Currently, the revenue from local game development is only Rp 750 billion per year, or equivalent to 2.5 percent of the Indonesian market. This means that 97.5 percent gravitates towards foreign games. Shafiq also complained about the local gaming industry's hindrance in accessing initial funding.
Meutya has asked her staff to immediately map various concrete collaboration potentials to follow up the dialogue with industry players. She has asked for the results of this mapping to be reported to her next week. "It will be reported to me next week to decide which ones we can assist. With limitations here, we really want to be able to help with our ecosystem," Meutya said.
