TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Indonesia remains committed to strengthening cooperation among D-8 member countries by holding activities that discuss common challenges despite postponing the D-8 Summit.
According to a written statement from the ministry on Wednesday, as quoted by ANTARA, this was conveyed by the Director General of Information and Public Diplomacy at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heru H Subolo, in the Preliminary Discussion of the D-8 Youth Dialogue with the theme "Navigating Uncertainty, Building Resilience" at Airlangga University (Unair), Surabaya.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized the discussion activity in collaboration with Unair, and it became one of Indonesia's achievements during its chairmanship of the D-8 from 2026 to 2027.
Heru believes that collaborating with non-governmental organizations that prioritize partnerships between the government, academia, and experts will lead to more diverse perspectives, recommendations, and innovative, inclusive solutions.
The discussion focused on two of the five priority issues for Indonesia's D-8 chairmanship, namely “Energy Resilience in the Midst of Global Uncertainty” and “Food Security in a Time of Crisis.”
The discussion noted that energy and food security are born from a sustainable ecosystem, which includes, among other things, a secure supply, sound fiscal space, a just transition, and strong social acceptance.
The discussion also emphasized the important role of youth in building collective awareness and pioneering concrete, solution-oriented activities.
In this regard, Muhammad Miftahussurur, the Unair Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Community Development, called on the campus to implement activity recommendations and encourage D-8 missions aimed at solving common challenges.
Meanwhile, Deputy II for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy at the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs, Muhammad K Koba, said that the D-8 has a unique character as a cross-regional economic alliance across the Global South, encompassing South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
He argues that this characterizes the D-8 as a potentially middle-power group capable of acting as a balancing force amid great power rivalry, the fragmentation of the global order, and increasing protectionism.
The discussion activity was attended by around 150 students from various universities in Surabaya, including Unair, Surabaya State University (UNESA), Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS), Surabaya University (UBAYA), Surabaya State Polytechnic of Shipping, Ciputra University, Hang Tuah University, UIN Sunan Ampel, and UPN Veteran East Java.
