TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commissioner of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Saurlin P. Siagian stated that the police should investigate the alleged installation of a tracking device in the car of the former Chair of the Gadjah Mada University Student Executive Board (BEM UGM), Tiyo Ardianto. The global positioning system (GPS) device was found under the car after he participated in a protest in the Gejayan area, Yogyakarta, on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Saurlin stated that the installation of the tracking device constitutes an illegal act. "The offense is reporting. So, the victim should report to the police for investigation," he said when contacted by Tempo, on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Saurlin mentioned that Tiyo could file a complaint with Komnas HAM. So far, he said, there have been no complaints from Tiyo related to the finding. "We will delve into it and consider whether to take proactive action. We do not yet know if it is related to the victim's public behavior," he said.
Tiyo Ardianto admitted to finding a tracking device attached to the frame of the car he was driving. Because he felt unsafe traveling, Tiyo borrowed his brother's car.
He did not know who installed the tracking device. "What is clear is that this is a very disgusting incident, which also indicates how disgusting the current regime in power is," Tiyo said via his Instagram account @tiyoardianto_ on Saturday.
In a video he uploaded, he showed a black PBX Finder tracking device. He initially received an unusual notification on his phone. "PBX FINDER Found Moving With You. The owner can locate it. Tap to open Track to see available actions," read the notification that appeared on Tiyo's phone.
He then searched for the tracking device and found it at the bottom of the car. After communicating with several close acquaintances, he was advised to soak the tracking device in water.
Regarding the finding of the tracking device, Tiyo mentioned the issue of criticism, which was met with threats. "Those of us who criticize for the improvement of the nation with sincere love are instead met with threats and danger," Tiyo said.
According to him, neither terror, intimidation, nor repression will stop him from speaking critically. "Let us make sure that the more we are pressed, the more we resist, the more we are vocal against terror, intimidation, and repression, the faster the days of revolution," he said.
On Sunday, he again found a tracking device attached to the rear tire of his car. Tiyo conveyed the finding through his Instagram account.
