TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged that the conservation and restoration project for Prambanan Temple will be completed ahead of 2029. Modi even assured that he would return to Indonesia to personally inaugurate the completed project.
Modi made the remarks during his visit to Prambanan Temple in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, alongside President Prabowo Subianto.
"My friend, President Prabowo, also made me promise him that we will finish this work before 2029, and I need to make a return visit once again to Indonesia to inaugurate the temple complex after restoration," Modi said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, during a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.
Modi is confident that with meticulous planning, the bilateral cooperation between India and Indonesia can be wrapped up ahead of schedule. The joint restoration initiative for Prambanan Temple was originally conceived as a long-term project spanning from 2026 to 2036. The project focuses on rebuilding more than 200 perwara or companion temples within the Prambanan complex that currently lie in ruins.
"With our joint efforts, we will finish this work before 2029, and together we will celebrate the restoration and inauguration as a big festival," Modi stated.
Earlier today, President Prabowo Subianto and Indian PM Narendra Modi officially signed the cooperation agreement for the temple's conservation and restoration. The formal launch was held by both leaders as part of PM Modi's official state visit to Indonesia.
In his press statement, President Prabowo expressed his gratitude for PM Modi's visit to the nation. Prabowo voiced hope that their joint visit to Prambanan Temple would further solidify the bonds of friendship between the people of Indonesia and India. "Culture is a bridge that can unite nations, deepen mutual understanding, and build the trust needed to face the future together," Prabowo said.
The Gerindra Party chairperson welcomed the collaboration between Indonesia and India on the landmark Prambanan restoration project. "On this occasion, I welcome the agreement on the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple complex between the governments of Indonesia and India," he said.
