TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Norway is mulling a ban on smart glasses and other wearable devices equipped with cameras amid growing concerns about the privacy risks posed by such technology.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Wednesday, September 2, quoted by Antara, Norway's Minister of Digitalization and Public Governance Karianne Tung said the government is considering regulations for "camera-enabled wearables," including those made by tech companies like Meta and Snap.
Currently, devices equipped with cameras that can connect to the internet and are equipped with facial recognition technology are becoming increasingly popular.
This technological development has raised concerns from civil liberties groups, who believe these devices could invade people's privacy. Some call the devices "pervert glasses," referring to the ability of these wearables to record other people in a discreet manner.
Karianne said that the current trend is for technology to combine artificial intelligence (AI) with cameras and microphones, which are then installed in glasses, headphones, hats, and various objects used in everyday life.
“We must prevent this equipment from being used to monitor other people in public places,” Karianne said.
According to her, the regulations being prepared by the Norwegian government could involve "banning functions such as facial recognition of other people in public spaces."
To review the policy, Karianne plans to form an "expert group" that will advise the government on measures required to strengthen the protection of people's privacy rights.
