TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto admitted to being an admirer of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prabowo expressed his feelings during a speech addressed to the Indian diaspora at the Indian Community Reception held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
The event was part of Modi's visit to Jakarta. "Once again, I do not interfere in India's domestic politics, but I am a personal admirer of Shri Narendra Modi," said Prabowo in his address.
During the occasion, Prabowo emphasized that the relationship between Indonesia and India is not only built through economic, trade, and political cooperation, but also through sharing experiences regarding democracy, maintaining unity in diversity, and building a stable government.
The Chairman of the Gerindra Party invited all layers of Indonesian society to learn from India's democracy experience. According to him, India has succeeded in peacefully transitioning governance despite having numerous ethnic groups, regional languages, and states.
The Indian Community Reception served as the closing night of PM Modi's state visit to Jakarta. Modi visited Indonesia for three days. He was in Jakarta since Monday, July 6, 2026. In addition to visiting the capital, Modi also planned to visit Yogyakarta to see the Prambanan Temple.
In India, Modi is a popular figure but not without controversy. Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have been criticized several times for being accused of pushing a Hindu nationalist agenda.
Quoted from the PMIndia page, Modi is the first Prime Minister of India born after Indian independence. He has served as the Prime Minister of India since 2014 and won re-election in 2019 for a second term. Previously, he also served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014.
Then, on June 4, 2024, Modi once again retained his position as the Prime Minister of India. This victory made him the President of India for 3 consecutive terms. Under the leadership of Shri Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party achieved significant victories in the parliamentary elections of 2014, 2019, and 2024.
