TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto attended the Indian Community Reception held at the Jakarta International Convention Center (JICC) on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. The event took place while Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was visiting Jakarta on the same day.
Prabowo delivered a speech at the forum, expressing his gratitude and happiness for being able to meet the Indian community in Indonesia. He said, "Once again, allow me to convey a very warm greeting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visit to Indonesia,"
Prabowo reflected on the honor he received as the main guest at the Republic Day of India celebration in 2025. According to him, this moment held historical significance because Indonesia's first President, Sukarno, was also the main guest at the first Republic Day of India celebration in 1950.
Meanwhile, in his address, Modi expressed appreciation for the warm welcome from President Prabowo and the Indonesian people. "This is an experience that I will always cherish," he said.
Modi mentioned seeing the affection the Indonesian people have for India. "Today, I even saw it at the Presidential Palace. The spirit of the Indonesian people, the smiles of the school children present at the palace, the spirit of young Indonesians, everything is so extraordinary. I cannot express it in words, it's truly extraordinary," Modi said.
He also expressed his admiration for the enthusiasm of the Indonesian people, which he considered a reflection of genuine friendship, including the popularity of Indian songs. According to Modi, this cultural closeness serves as a strong foundation for strengthening the relationship between the two countries in the future.
The Indian Community Reception served as the closing event of PM Modi's state visit to Jakarta. Modi visited Indonesia for three days, starting from Monday, July 6, 2026. In addition to visiting the capital, Modi also planned to visit Yogyakarta to see the Prambanan Temple.
President Prabowo officially welcomed Modi through a state event at the Merdeka Palace on Tuesday. They also held a closed bilateral meeting followed by a joint luncheon.
A number of strategic memoranda of understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and India were signed at the Merdeka Palace. This meeting resulted in 16 agreements between the two nations.
In the presence of President Prabowo and PM Narendra Modi, one of the cooperation documents exchanged was the collaboration between the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and the Indian Space Research Organisation. This agreement covers space research cooperation.
In addition, Indonesia and India announced 15 other documents covering cooperation in various fields, ranging from defense, energy, health, culture, to technology.
