Strawberry Moon to Peak on June 29: Best Time and Places to Watch

2 hours ago 2
The Strawberry Moon rises in the sky over Depok, West Java, on Wednesday, June 15, 2022. The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) describes this supermoon as a phenomenon that occurs when the full moon reaches its closest position to Earth (perigee). The name Strawberry Moon originates from the Algonquin Native American people of the northeastern United States and Eastern Canada, referring to the seasonal strawberry harvest. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Summer is set to begin with a dazzling celestial display as the Strawberry Moon prepares to light up the night sky. The annual full moon, often associated with the arrival of warmer days, will also mark the first full moon of the summer season.

Adding to its significance, this year’s event will double as the final micromoon of 2026, offering skywatchers a rare opportunity to witness two astronomical milestones in a single spectacle.

What Is a Strawberry Moon?

While the name Strawberry Moon may evoke images of a pink or berry-colored glow, the moon itself will appear much like any other full moon.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the name originates from the traditional strawberry harvesting season in North America, when the fruit reaches its peak ripeness.

When Will the Strawberry Moon Peak?

The Strawberry Moon will reach its peak illumination on June 29 at 7:57 p.m. ET, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. However, skywatchers will still be able to enjoy its nearly full appearance for several nights before and after the peak.

While the moon officially reaches full phase before sunset in many locations, the best viewing opportunities are expected later in the evening when it rises above the horizon. In Belleville, for example, the sun is scheduled to set at 8:28 p.m., with moonrise following shortly after at 8:45 p.m.

How to Get the Best View of the Strawberry Moon?

Weather conditions are expected to cooperate with skywatchers on June 29, with forecasts calling for a clear, warm, and humid evening in areas like Belleville. Combined with minimal cloud cover, the conditions could provide an excellent opportunity to enjoy the Strawberry Moon at its brightest.

Even though the full moon reaches its peak before sunset in some locations, it will continue to appear large and brilliantly illuminated throughout the night. The moon also tends to look full for a day or two on either side of its peak phase.

For the best experience, astronomy enthusiasts should keep an eye on local weather forecasts, as heavy clouds, rain, or storms can quickly obscure the view of the night sky.
