TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Switzerland reached the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years after defeating Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in their Round of 16 clash at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on Tuesday, July 7.

Rubin Vargas converted the decisive spot kick after Colombia's Davinson Sánchez struck the crossbar and Cucho Hernández had his penalty saved by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, sending Switzerland into a quarterfinal showdown with defending champions Argentina.

As reported by ESPN, it marks Switzerland's first appearance in the World Cup quarterfinals since hosting the tournament in 1954 and the first time the Swiss have won multiple knockout matches in a single World Cup campaign.

The match developed into a tense tactical battle, with Switzerland relying on their organized defensive structure while Colombia looked to create chances through quick transitions and attacking combinations. Despite contrasting approaches, neither side managed to break the deadlock over 120 minutes.

Colombia created the first clear opportunity in the 21st minute when Gustavo Puerta unleashed a curling effort from outside the penalty area, but Kobel produced an excellent diving save to keep the score level.

Switzerland responded nine minutes later through Fabian Rieder, whose powerful strike was denied by Camilo Vargas before the Colombian goalkeeper reacted quickly again to stop Dan Ndoye's follow-up effort.

The Swiss were missing breakout star Johan Manzambi, who suffered a knee injury during training on Monday after contributing three goals and two assists in the tournament, while Colombia were without injured forward Jhon Córdoba.

According to The Guardian, the 52,497-capacity crowd at BC Place was overwhelmingly dressed in Colombia's yellow colors, creating a lively atmosphere throughout a tightly contested encounter dominated by disciplined defending and missed opportunities.

Switzerland nearly found the breakthrough shortly after halftime when substitute Djibril Sow fired over the crossbar from close range, while Colombia wasted a golden chance in the 63rd minute after Luis Suárez capitalized on a misplaced pass but sent his effort well over the goal.

Colombia gradually gained momentum late in regulation and into extra time. Jaminton Campaz appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty before Jhon Lucumí headed against the crossbar from a Juan Quintero corner.

Campaz threatened again moments later with a long-range strike that forced another impressive save from Kobel, while Switzerland nearly snatched victory when substitute Zeki Amdouni tested Camilo Vargas with a low effort inside the penalty area.

The biggest opportunity arrived in the 116th minute when Campaz found himself unmarked inside the box but fired over the crossbar, sending the match into a penalty shootout.

Switzerland held their nerve from the spot before Vargas calmly converted the winning penalty after Sánchez's miss and Hernández's saved effort sealed Colombia's elimination.

The victory sends Switzerland into the World Cup quarterfinals, where they will face Argentina after the defending champions staged a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt. Meanwhile, Colombia exited the tournament after suffering a second consecutive World Cup knockout defeat on penalties.
