TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s men’s badminton team opened their campaign at the Thomas Cup 2026 with a commanding 5–0 sweep over Algeria in their Group D opener at Forum Horsens in Horsens, Denmark, on Friday evening local time, or early Saturday morning in Indonesia.

The victory was capped by the men’s doubles pair of Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, who sealed the clean sweep in the final match. Making their Thomas Cup debut, the duo played with confidence and control throughout, defeating Algeria’s Adel Hamek and Mohamed Abdelaziz Ouchefoun in straight games, 21–4, 21–7.

Earlier in the tie, Indonesia’s singles players had already put the team in a dominant position. Jonatan Christie delivered the first point with a comfortable 21–8, 21–6 win over Adel Hamek. He was followed by Alwi Farhan, who extended the lead by beating Mohamed Abderrahime Belarbi 21–8, 21–7.

Indonesia’s third singles rubber saw Anthony Sinisuka Ginting secure the team’s qualification to victory after defeating Mohamed Abdelaziz Ouchefoun 21–8, 21–6, ensuring an unassailable lead.

In doubles, the experienced pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri added another point with a 21–14, 21–8 win over Mohamed Abderrahime Belarbi and Koceila Mammeri, pushing Indonesia ahead 4–0 before the final match.

Raymond and Joaquin then completed the rout, wrapping up a near-perfect performance from the Indonesian side, with all matches won in straight games.

The result marks a strong start for Indonesia in Group D as they prepare for tougher tests against Thailand and France in the coming fixtures.

In the other Group D match, Thailand also made a strong opening statement with a 4–1 victory over France.

Thailand’s top singles player Kunlavut Vitidsarn defeated Christo Popov 21–15, 22–20, while Panitchaphon Teeraratsakul added another point by beating Alex Lanier 21–17, 21–19.

France managed to pull one point back through Toma Junior Popov, who overcame Puritat Arree 21–6, 21–7. However, Thailand secured the tie when the doubles pair Ruttanapak Oupthong and Dechapol Puavaranukroh defeated Julien Maio and William Villeger 21–15, 21–17, 21–10.

Thailand then sealed the overall win after Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul beat the Popov brothers pairing, Christo and Toma Junior, 11–21, 21–12, 21–12.
